Reese Witherspoon on Careers: Don't Chase Your Dreams; Do This Instead
"Everybody has dreams. Doesn't mean you're going to be that thing. You are supposed to do what you're talented at." - Reese Witherspoon

She is not wrong.
I was a Professional Bowler at 18. After being top five in California, I went on the PBA National Tour where I was not in the top 100. Was working as a bowling alley mechanic, and one day I'm changing out the compressor on an A/C unit. It was so hot my tennis shoes melted to the roof. Looked at the guy helping me and said, "I have to find a new job." True story.
Went back to college and got my degree from CSU Fullerton. After nine months of searching for a software development job, I got my first tech job because the CIO said, "CSU Fullerton turns out good people." Spent 20 years in tech, eventually switching from being a CIO to sales. Was a solid technology executive, Director, VP, CIO, however, I enjoyed the people side more.
For those that know me, you know the rest of the story. I was with IIS, which went public on the NASDAQ, then SRD, a counter-terrorism software company funded by the CIA. SRD was acquired by IBM for $75,000,000 in 2004.
Retired, but through serendipity, started my own executive recruiting firm 22 years ago. Never said I was the best Executive Recruiter, although I probably worked longer and harder than most. I get to help people with new career opportunities, and the business funds my true passion: Philanthropy. Best of all, I get to work with some of the most gifted and talented executives on the planet.
It's true. Find something you love, and you will never work a day in your life.
